Makerere University Printery has been in operation since 1969. It has been operating as a Service Unit for the University beginning in the main library as photographic service unit.

It was not until 1971 that the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD) extended financial support in form of formidable Printing equipment. This led to its relocation to the basement of the Main Building.

During this period until the early 1990s, it was elevated to an in-House Print shop providing various printing and binding services to the University community as well as the general public (but at subsidized prices)

In 1995 the University Council finally agreed to accord Makerere University Printery the status of a Full Commercial Unit to compete equally with other commercial print shops in and outside the country. In 1996, Mr. Sagala became the first Manager under the new status till September 2009 when new management under Joseph Kirabo took over.
Since memorial the Printery has been able to attract support from International Organizations for instance in 1992, The European Economic Union (EEC) donated equipment worth 664,185,034 millions. Consequently in 2007, the Japan government through the Japan Cultural Grant programme donated Printing and Binding Equipment worth 722,759,076 millions. And this year 2011 we have acquired an Industrial digital Printing Machine worth over 400,000,000 Millions from our own resources.

It is fully owned by Makerere University Council, and is run by the Board of Commercial Units. It is headed by a Manager, presiding over a management committee comprising of; the production Manager, the Accountant and 4 Heads of sections, with a total workforce of 41 persons. The unit is self sustaining with an independent budget. It’s profit making and its required to remit part of the profits to Makerere University Council and the balance is ploughed back to reinvestments.
