Born in 1926, Prof. Joseph Sekyala Winter Lutwama was the first African to be named Head Department of Preventive Medicine, consequently the Institute of Public Health in 1964 and currently the School of Public Health. The following year, he was appointed Dean of the Medical School, a position he held until he was appointed Vice Chancellor of Makerere University on 20th January, 1975. He held this position until 19th September 1977.
Prof. Lutwama passed away on 23rd October 1986 at Mulago, Kampala.
